NEW 4C POSTAL STANDARD FOR MAILBOX DESIGN SPECIFICATION EFFECTIVE NOW

January 08, 2007

Manhattan, Kansas -- Regulatory changes in the construction industry are nothing new, however, the Postal specification governing wall-mounted mailboxes hasn't changed for more than 30 years...until now.

The new 4C Postal specification requires a bigger footprint for wall-mounted mailboxes due to the larger size of the resident compartments and parcel locker requirements. Professionals involved in design and construction of multi-family housing and commercial buildings requiring Postal delivery are required to specify mailbox systems that comply with the new USPS STD-4C specification for any new construction or major renovation with building permits issued on or after October 5, 2006.

The new STD-4C reflects changing customer mailing habits, larger mail and package trends as well as a desire for increased protection for mail. It includes the following physical and structural changes for centralized wall-mounted mailboxes:

- Requires larger compartment form factor (12" W x 15" D x 3" H) -- nearly twice the size of the previous standard
- Introduces a parcel locker requirement of 1:10 parcel locker to customer compartment ratio
- Strengthens security for entire receptacle including customer compartment lock design
- Units must be designed for indoor or outdoor use
- Meets Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards
